Thank You for Working Me During the Winter Heat Event
This is the first time working Winter Heat and I made over 200 contacts locally, with most coming from my attic antenna. It was lots of fun to work Winter Heat in the simplex mode.
WINTERHEAT is a month long amateur radio simplex event.
What is Winterheat?
WINTERHEAT is a month long amateur radio simplex event.
The goal and purpose is for amateur radio operators to make as many contacts as possible over a month long period of time using only designated simplex frequencies.
WINTERHEAT OPERATING GUIDELINES
GENERAL INFORMATION:
All participants must be registered with the automated logging system for contacts to be credited
All contacts must be made on the designated amateur radio frequencies.
Contacts must be via FM voice and can be either analog or digital (DMR, Fusion, D-Star).
All contacts must be made during the event period. (00:01UTC January 1, 2023 to 23:59UTC January 31, 2023)
Stations may only make contact with each other once per day on each designated frequency.
DMR, C4FM and D-STAR Simplex Frequencies are simply recommendations. Since some areas have pre-designated digital voice simplex frequencies, they may use those frequencies as long as no external repeaters or other infrastructure is used. Simply select the frequency/mode that closely matches your method.

SCORING:
When making a QSO, only one station will enter the information into the system. Usually the station calling CQ would enter the initial QSO information. Does not matter who submits the initial QSO info as long as the QSO does not get logged twice.
The other station will be responsible for confirming the QSO.
Unconfirmed QSO will be credited with 1 contact point where a confirmed QSO will be awarded a value of 10 contact points.
A QSO can be made with a station that has not signed up as a participant. However that QSO will only be award a single contact point. Should the non-participant sign up for event after the QSO is made. The QSO made prior to their sign up will still be credited as a single contact point.

WINTERHEAT is a month long amateur radio simplex event.
The goal and purpose is for amateur radio operators to make as many contacts as possible over a month long period of time using only designated simplex frequencies..
INTERHEAT 2023 started at 00:01 UTC on January 1, 2023 and concludes at 23:59 UTC on January 31, 2023.
This is the fourth year for this event. Last year over 1,000 participants made over 134,000 contacts.
The event is open to all FCC licensed amateur radio operators.
Q. How to do participate in WINTERHEAT?
A. To particpate, you must sign up to use the automated logging system.
Q.Can 2 Meter SSB be used to make contacts?
A. No, only FM voice is allowed for QSO credit.
Q Why is 10 Meters not included?
A. The event is organized to allow all amateur radio operators to participate. Technician Class Operators do not have privileges on 10M FM
Q. Why do we have to use the established simplex frequencies?
A. Having a pre-set list of simplex frequencies will make it easier to find other stations participating in the event.
Q. How are contacts counted/scored?
A. Contacts are based on a points system. Participants will need to use the logging system to confirm the contact. Unconfirmed contacts will be given 1 point where confirmed contacts are assigned a value of 10.
Q. I am trying to sign up but my call sign information is not appearing.
A. There is about a 24-hour delay between the logging system and the FCC license database to syncronize. If you have a new call sign or have received a vanity call sign, please allow a day for the systems to syncronize.
Q. Can our club, group or organization participate in the event using our club call sign?
A. NO, This is an individual event. Having a group of people using a club call sign would be unfair to individual operators.
Q. Which station logs the contact into the system?
A. Typically this would be the station calling CQ. It really does not matter who initially logs the QSO as long as the QSO does not get logged twice.
Q. When on the air trying to get contacts with other stations for the event. What is the best approach?
A. We have found that the best approach is to call out CQ on the simplex frequencies and include "WINTERHEAT" when calling. For example, "CQ CQ CQ WINTERHEAT CQ CQ Looking for contacts".
